 On July 11, 2024, the ten-day “China Root-Seeking Tour” summer camp Beijing Chaoyang Camp came to a successful conclusion. A total of 76 Chinese teenagers from 8 countries and regions, including Switzerland, South Africa, the Philippines and Canada, gathered in Beijing to gain an in-depth understanding of Chinese culture, especially dragon culture, through a variety of activities and learning. The summer camp was hosted by the China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, undertaken by the Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the Beijing Youth Federation and the Chaoyang District Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, supported by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Beijing Municipal Government and Shoukai Group, and implemented by the Beijing International Chinese Language Institute.

Introduction to the theme of the summer camp

With the theme of “Searching for the Dragon in the Year of the Dragon, the Descendants of the Dragon”, the summer camp allowed the campers to have an in-depth understanding of the cultural knowledge related to dragons, experience Chinese festivals and customs related to dragons, look for dragons in Beijing’s scenic spots, feel the achievements of urban renewal in modern Beijing and Chaoyang, and enhance their understanding of the spirit of dragons and the cognition of “descendants of dragons”.

Opening ceremony

On the morning of July 3, the opening ceremony was officially launched under the witness of Yan Weiqun, Secretary of the Party Group of the Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, and Li Guohong, member of the Standing Committee of the Chaoyang District Party Committee. Yan Weiqun, Li Guohong and other leaders at the meeting jointly presented flags to the summer camp. The 2024 “China Root-Seeking Tour” summer camp Beijing Chaoyang Camp officially kicked off.

Go out and visit

Over the next few days, the campers visited many of Beijing’s places of interest. On July 4, the campers visited the Forbidden City. On July 5th, the campers toured the Great Wall and visited the Museum of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. On July 7, they also visited the Summer Palace and the Water Cube, and experienced the blending of ancient and modern cultures.

Cultural learning and exchange

During the summer camp, the campers interacted with local students from Beijing Heping Street No. 1 Middle School, and participated in activities such as dragon dance and Chinese calligraphy and painting. The campers also participated in a number of lectures on dragon culture. On July 6th and 8th, campers delved into the cultural connotations of dragons through a series of lessons. The course content is rich and colorful, including the dragon in Chinese, the “dragon” custom in Chinese festivals, the dragon in literary classics, and the dragon on the central axis. In addition, the campers also felt the charm of dragon culture more intuitively through interactive experience activities such as shadow puppetry.

Experience modern China, shopping, and more

In addition to learning traditional culture, the campers also experienced the prosperity of modern Beijing. Campers walked in Blue Harbor and shopped on Silk Street to experience the vitality and charm of the modern city.

Closing ceremony

On July 10th, the closing ceremony of the summer camp was held. Su Yong, member of the party group, vice chairman and first-level inspector of the Beijing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Li Xiaoli, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and chairman of the trade union of Shoukai Group, and Huang Wenjuan, chairman of the Chaoyang District Federation of Overseas Chinese, attended the closing ceremony. The closing ceremony kicked off with a performance of “Dragon Age”, where the campers showcased what they had learned during the summer camp. In his speech, the representatives of the campers expressed their love for the summer camp and their love for Chinese culture.

Zhang Ruixi, the camper representative of the Geneva Chinese Education Foundation, said: “Thank you very much to all the leaders, teachers and team leaders, it is your hard work that has made us have a pleasant and meaningful journey to find our roots. During the summer camp, we not only learned a lot of knowledge, but also had a lot of fun and made many new friends. ”

At the closing ceremony, the participating leaders presented certificates to the campers, praising their outstanding performance in the summer camp and encouraging the campers to continue to carry forward Chinese culture in their future studies and lives.

The leaders and teachers of overseas Chinese schools and overseas Chinese groups presented pennants to the organizers, co-organizers and supporters of this summer camp one by one to show their respect.

In the summer camp achievement display session, the campers of the Geneva Chinese Education Foundation in Switzerland demonstrated their learning achievements and deep understanding of dragon culture through three and a half sentences of “My Journey to Find My Roots”.

Future ProspectsThrough this summer camp, the Chinese teenagers not only experienced the rich and colorful Chinese culture, but also deepened their understanding and love for Chinese culture.
