Session 1: Basic rhythm and musicality training

Target:

  • Cultivate children’s initial perception of music, perceive rhythm and melody.
  • Promote your interest in music through hands-on, foot-moving activities.

Course Schedule:

  1. Lesson 1: Understanding Music and Rhythm
    • A brief introduction to the basic concepts of music.
    • Perceive simple beats (2/4, 4/4 beats) through clapping and stomping games.
    • Experience different percussion instruments (e.g. tambourine, shaker).
  2. Lesson 2: Percussion Rhythm Games
    • Simple rhythmic exercises using percussion instruments (African drums, Chinese drums, tambourine, etc.).
    • Enhance your child’s sense of rhythm through rhythm imitation games.
  3. Lesson 3: Understanding pitch and pitch
    • Use instruments such as piano and melodica to allow children to experience different pitches.
    • Learn to sing the basic scales (Doremi) and imitate tonal changes.
  4. Lesson 4: Exploring Chinese Rhythms
    • Learn the rhythms of traditional Chinese music (e.g. gongs, drums, chimes).
    • Imitate and experience rhythmic patterns in Chinese music through percussion instruments.
  5. Lesson 5: Singing and rhythm combined
    • Teach and sing simple nursery rhymes and encourage children to clap to the rhythm or play with musical instruments.
    • Experience the harmony of melody and rhythm.
  6. Lesson 6: Exploring the rhythms of Western music
    • Learn common rhythmic patterns in Western music, such as swing rhythms and march rhythms.
    • These rhythms are mimicked through body rhythms and percussion instruments.
  7. Lesson 7: Music and Body Coordination
    • Music Movement Activity: According to the speed and rhythm of the music, children use their bodies to respond accordingly.
    • Through dance and simple movements, you can perceive the emotional changes in the music.
  8. Lesson 8: Rhythmic improvisation
    • Let the children try to create their own rhythmic fragments, which are expressed with different instruments.
    • Enhance creativity and improvisational skills.
  9. Lesson 9: Group rhythm playing
    • Children work in groups to play simple rhythms and melodic fragments to develop teamwork spirit.
  10. Lesson 10: Presentation and Review
    • Review the rhythms and melodies you’ve learned in the previous weeks and organize small rhythmic performances.

Session 2: Basic Music Theory and Notes

Target:

  • Introduce basic music theory knowledge to help children understand notes and sheet music.
  • Learn simple sight-singing exercises and reinforce your sense of rhythm.

Course Schedule:

  1. Lesson 1: Recognize musical notes
    • Teach your child to recognize whole notes, quarter notes, half notes and their time values.
    • By tapping the rhythm with a percussion instrument, you can understand the length of the notes.
  2. Lesson 2: Music Note Games and Exercises
    • Solidify your child’s understanding of musical notes through note card games.
    • Combine simple rhythmic patterns for note practice.
  3. Lesson 3: Basic understanding of Western musical instruments
    • Introduction to Western musical instruments such as piano, violin, flute, etc.
    • Let the kids try playing simple notes with a keyboard or melodica.
  4. Lesson 4: Chinese Instruments and Musical Notes
    • Introduce Chinese musical instruments (e.g., guzheng, erhu, pipa) and let children understand how they are represented in sheet music.
    • Imitate and play with simple notes.
  5. Lesson 5: Learn simple notation and staves
    • Let the children know the notation and staff, and understand the basic notation.
    • Improve your pitch with sight-singing practice in short notation.
  6. Lesson 6: Rhythm and note practice
    • Combining notes and rhythm exercises, allowing children to practice with percussion and melodic instruments to match the rhythm.
  7. Lesson 7: Preliminary understanding of melody
    • Learn to sing simple melodies and reinforce your understanding of notes and rhythms through sight-singing exercises.
  8. Lesson 8: Singing songs
    • Learn to sing simple Chinese and English children’s songs so that children understand the use of notes and melodies in songs.
  9. Lesson 9: Playing together
    • By working in groups and playing simple pieces, cooperation and coordination skills are developed.
  10. Lesson 10: Acting and Displaying
    • Review the lesson content and show the children’s singing and instrumental playing.

Session 3: Music & Performance

Target:

  • Cultivate children’s musical performance ability, improve self-confidence and stage performance.
  • Through the combination of singing and instrumental playing, the musical perception is enhanced.

Course Schedule:

  1. Lesson 1: Music and Physical Expression
    • Through dance and movement to music, children practice how to express emotions in music through their bodies.
  2. Lesson 2: Musical Emotional Expression
    • Through different songs, children can understand the emotions of music and learn how to express emotions such as happiness and sadness in singing.
  3. Lesson 3: Simple Musical Theatre Rehearsal
    • Engage children in simple musical theatre performances, assign roles, and practice singing and lines.
  4. Lesson 4: Performance Skills Training
    • Through games and role-plays, children are trained to be confident and expressive in performance.
  5. Lesson 5: Rhythm and singing
    • Let the children sing along to the rhythm and play with percussion instruments.
  6. Lesson 6: Performance Rehearsal
    • Continue to rehearse musical theatre or singing performance projects, practice co-op performance and stage interaction.
  7. Lesson 7: Combining music and dance
    • Through simple dance movements and singing, you will learn how to coordinate your body movements with the rhythm of the music.
  8. Lesson 8: Chinese and Western Musical Performance Styles
    • Introduce the different styles of Chinese and Western music performances, and allow children to imitate and experience music performances in different cultures.
  9. Lesson 9: Performance Rehearsal and Revision
    • Rehearsals continue and final adjustments and corrections are made to the content of the performance.
  10. Lesson 10: Musical Performance Presentation
    • Hold a small performance for parents to observe their children’s learning.
